Fruits of the Spirit - Love

Fruits of the Spirit

Let's go through the first of the nine fruits of the spirit and map it out to the inverse negative actions.

That way we can understand the way we SHOULD be walking and WHAT to replace with good action.

Focus on the good and godly and then see where to replace the negative.

Let us seek first the Kingdom of God. The face of God is much more pleasant to seek out instead of the evil ways of man.

The Table (in no certain order at this point.)

Fruit of the SpiritFruit of the Flesh
LoveSexual immorality, impurity,
Joyindecency, jealousy
Patiencerage, hostility,
Kindnessstrife, idolatry,
Goodnesswitchcraft, selfish ambition
Faithfulnessdissension, factions
Genlenessenvy,
Self-Controldrunkenness, carousing

Looks like the first of the Fruits is LOVE. A much talked about topic so lets get on with it (I guess).

Love

Let's refresh what the passage says about LOVE.

Galatians 5:5-6
5 For through the Ruach, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Messiah Yeshua, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any meaning—but only trust and faithfulness expressing itself through love.

We see right away that we need to be expressing our trust and faithfulness THROUGH love.

Want to show your trust and faithfulness to God? Love people as Jesus did.

The Love mentioned here is the Agape love. The sacrificial love that took Jesus to the cross to be sacrificed on our behalf.

That is the love you need to walk in to show Trust and faithfulness.

Galatians 5:13-15
13 Brothers and sisters, you were called to freedom—only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole Torah can be summed up in a single saying: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not destroyed by one another.

Another way to serve one another.

Sacrifice.

You want to be a leader? You want to walk with responsibility?

It is going to cost you something. By definition. To be a leader as called by Jesus, you must serve. You must sacrifice something.

Maybe it is time, maybe it is your own "wind down time" or the "ME time."

It has to go for the whole Torah can be summed up in a single saying:  (sacrificially) Love your brother as yourself.

Replacement

So let's think about what this sacrificial love is supposed to replace.

Here is a list of the fruits of the flesh.

Adultery - moicheia G3431; adultery: - adultery.

Fornication - porneia G4203; harlotry (including adultery and incest); figuratively idolatry: - fornication.

uncleanness - akatharsia G169; impurity (the quality), physically or morally: - uncleanness.

lasciviousness - aselgeia From a compound of G1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed σελγής selgēs (of uncertain derivation, but apparently meaning continent); licentiousness (sometimes including other vices): - filthy, lasciviousness, wantonness.

idolatry - eidōlolatreia G1497 and G2999; image worship (literally or figuratively): - idolatry.

witchcraft - pharmakeia G5332; medication (“pharmacy”), that is, (by extension) magic (literal or figurative): - sorcery, witchcraft.

hatred - echthra Feminine of G2190; hostility; by implication a reason for opposition: - enmity, hatred.

variance - eris Of uncertain affinity; a quarrel, that is, (by implication) wrangling: - contention, debate, strife, variance.

emulations - zēlos G2204; properly heat, that is, (figuratively) “zeal” (in a favorable sense, ardor; in an unfavorable one, jealousy, as of a husband [figuratively of God], or an enemy, malice): - emulation, envy (-ing), fervent mind, indignation, jealousy, zeal.

wrath - thumos G2380; passion (as if breathing hard): - fierceness, indignation, wrath. Compare G5590.

strife - eritheia Perhaps from the same as G2042; properly intrigue, that is, (by implication) faction: - contention (-ious), strife.

seditions - dichostasia From a derivative of G1364 and G4714; disunion, that is, (figuratively) dissension: - division, sedition.

heresies - hairesis From G138; properly a choice, that is, (specifically) a party or (abstractly) disunion. (“heresy” is the Greek word itself.): - heresy [which is the Greekord itself], sect.

Envyings - phthonos Probably akin to the base of G5351; ill will (as detraction), that is, jealousy (spite): - envy.

murders - phonos From an obsolete primary φένω phenō (to slay); murder: - murder, + be slain with, slaughter.

drunkenness - methēApparently a primary word; an intoxicant, that is, (by implication) intoxication: - drunkenness.

revellings - kōmos From G2749; a carousal (as if a letting loose): - revelling, rioting.

Love covers a multitude of sins.

That is the "Jesus" answer that people throw out. It is not wrong, just not really helpful for the day to day.

So how to live in a place of sacrificial love?

I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

I literally enumerated all of the fruits of the Flesh.

Replace the flesh with the ways of the spirit.

We will go through each week and build out the fuller picture of how to replace each of the fruits of the flesh with the spirit.

Prayer

Read through the places of the flesh and repent of the ones you have walked in.

Ask that the God of Heaven above, your Kingly Father who loves you so much, would help you learn to abide in his love.

Finally, beloved, I leave you with this.

John 15:5-17
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for apart from Me, you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and is dried up. Such branches are picked up and thrown into the fire and burned.

7
“If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. 8 In this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples.”

9
“Just as the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you. Abide in My love! 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and your joy may be full.

12
“This is My commandment, that you love one another just as I have loved you. [a] 13 No one has greater love than this: that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you.

15
“I am no longer calling you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. Now I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

16
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you. I selected you so that you would go and produce fruit, and your fruit would remain. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in My name.

17
“These things I command you, so that you may love one another.”
